Address:
West Bali National Park, Gerokgak, Buleleng Regency - Bali.
A serene gravesite, memorial and temple situated in Gerogkak,
West Bali National Park, that honors two lovers who fell victim to a tragedy
straight out of a Shakespeare play. It’s
the story of Jayaprana, the handsome, pure of heart adopted son of the Raja of
Buleleng and his lovely bride Layonsari, whom the evil king had designs
on. After the king eliminates Jayaprana
in a dastardly scheme Layonsari goes to Teluk Terima where she commits
suicide. Legend has it that the two
lovers were buried in the forest there and are commemorated by a tomb, one of
the most sacred in Buleleng where many Balinese women bring offerings in search
of magical aid the shrine is said to bring.
The site involves a steep climb to the top but once there you will be
treated to beautiful panoramic views of Teluk Terima, halfway across to Java’s
Mount Semeru, to Menjangan Island, and to Gilimanuk, Bali’s western tip.
The burial site has become one of the most sacred sites in Buleleng regency. A temple has been built nearby and the people in Bali and elsewhere worship there and pray for everlasting love.
