One of Bali’s many temples that recognize miraculous events in the life of Danghyang Nirartha, the wandering 16th century Javanese sage, Pura Rambut Siwi (Worship of The Hair) is noted as the temple that contains a holy relic in the form of a lock of hair from the head of this venerated priest who left it to the village of Yeh Embang in 1546 as a gesture of respect to the villagers.  It is a low cliff top temple, quite simple in design but surrounded by a beautiful locale including rice paddies, black sand beaches and flowering frangipani and cempaka trees.

There are many temples attributed to the sage Danghyang Niratha. On his way to meet the King of Bali, he heard of a village suffering from a great epidemic. He detoured there, cured the villagers of the disease and they begged him to stay there and protect them. As he wanted to go to see the King, he left them a lock of his hair (rambut) for protection (siwi). This hair is now stored in one of the inner shrines here.

The temple is finely built of red brick with exquisite paras reliefs depicting scenes from the ancient play "Arjuna Wiwaha". A particularly good sculpture of Rangda stands guard in the gateway facing the sea. Down on the beach there are several cave temples, one of the most important bearing a sacred spring.
