Tenganan is not a market, per se; however, this unique village is renowned for its beautiful woven textiles called the geringsing double ikat, and many visitors frequent this destination purely to obtain the vibrant and traditionally made weavings. The technique is the only one in Indonesia and the resulting fabric is famous in foreign countries too. In the past, Tenganan was one of the most secluded societies in all of Indonesia, and to this day, the ancient Bali Aga culture, which pre-dates the Majapahit kingdom, is still retained within the village’s contained enclosure though its community traditions, layout, and architecture. Tenganan residents still use the barter system in daily life.
