Tuan Lange Street, Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali

Located on the eastern outskirts of Kuta on Jl. Tuan Lange, in an old Chinese cemetery unceremoniously situated between improvised houses and backyards lays the memorial tomb site of influential Danish trader and adviser to Bali’s kings and princes, Mads Johansen Lange who made his name in Bali and Lombok in the 1820’s and 1830’s.  The 2m black and white, stone and cement pyramid-shaped monument marks the final resting place of Lange who lived his grand life in Kuta when it was a prominent port town during the 19th century.  The Balinese know the site as the ‘holy Chinese place’.

On the tomb’s front, a plaque bears the words “Sacred to the Memory of Mads Johansen Lange, Knight of the Nederland, Leeuw and Danish Gold Medal, born in the Island Langeland, Denmark, Sept. 18 1807. Departed this life at Bali May 13 1856 after a residence of 18 years on this Island.”

Entry to the tomb is via a side gate; there is no admission fee, no guide or other information. It takes only 10 minutes to check the place out.
