Located at the bottom of an immense canyon in the village of Tampak Siring, Tirta Empul is a temple considered to be a place for healing and purification through its many lake-fed springs, flowing with what is regarded to be holy water. Built in 962 AD, the main attraction of the compound is a long rectangular stone pool, filled with koi fish and fed by the sacred spring via 12 fountain spouts. Overlooking Tirta Empul, on a nearby hill, is the Government Palace, built in 1954 as a residence for Dutch officials, and later used by former Indonesian president Soekarno as his place of rest during his frequent visits to Bali.
