Accessible only by boat via the volcanic Lake Batur, Trunyan is an isolated village that is home to the Bali Aga (original Balinese) people. Getting here is known to be a tricky ordeal, however, try to partner up with a trusty local guide that can take you there; a visit is very much worth the hassle. The main attraction in Trunyan is the cemetery – ancient traditions preserved by the Bali Aga include the aboveground open burial of corpses covered by light cloth, open to the elements and left to freely decompose. The dead bodies are placed underneath a monolithic tarumenyan tree, said to be more than 1,200 years old. The tree, indigenous to the area, absorbs the literal aroma of death and is believed to be holy.
