At the bottom of Ubud’s famous Monkey Forest Road is a shady sanctuary of ancient trees that is home to a population of long-tailed macaques.  This sacred place has been set aside for the mischievous gray primates to thank them for the help they provided Rama during the rescue of Sita his bride from King Rawana in the Hindu epic, Ramayana.  The picturesque trails that wind through Monkey Forest lead to a Pura Dalem Padang Tegal (death temple) on a hill as well as to steep steps that end at the base of a beautiful and gigantic banyan tree with a small water temple.

The Sacred Monkey Forest is a popular tourist attraction in Ubud - a unique experience for everyone. Walking in the park you are transported into a different world through close contact with the monkeys. You will be mesmerized as you watch the monkeys playing on the ground and in the trees, displaying their natural behaviors’ as they would in the wild, so don't be surprised if they stroll on the path straight in front of you! Guides are positioned along the paths and are happy to answer any questions.
