Established by private collector Suteja Neka who began amassing works in 1966, this comprehensive museum features one of the most diverse and important art collection on the island contained in four galleries.  Painters ranging from famous Balinese traditionalists such as I Gusti Nyoman Lempad and Ida Bagus Made to famous Europeans who have influenced art on the island including Rudolph Bonnet and Walter Spies plus modern Indonesian artists all have works displayed

The Neka's 2,500 sqm of exhibit space exhibits about 300 pieces of modern Balinese art spanning the years from the late 19th century to the present. The Balinese-style pavilions are set in a tranquil garden overlooking a river: the Balinese Painting Hall, the Lempad Pavilion, the Arie Smit Pavilion, and the Contemporary Indonesian Art Hall all show a different facet of the country's creative talent through the ages.

The Neka Art Museum is not to be confused with the Neka Gallery, an affiliated but distinct collection. Watch out for the display of the week at the exhibition hall. Other structures on the site include a bookshop and a cafe.
