Meaning ‘The Temple Where All Things Are Measured’, King Jayaprangus built Pura Pengukar Ukaran on a ravine edge in the 12th century. The temple complex contains handfuls of pre-Hindu megaliths and a multitude of bales (pavilions), worn carved stones and an ornate shrine with lingga. A descending flight of large stone steps sits on its side, leading to Goa Garba (‘The Womb’) on the bank of the Pakrisan River. The aesthetics of a temple are judged by its symmetry and harmony with its surroundings and by this standard Goa Garba makes a striking and indelible impression. Blocks of stone have been joined without mortar and perfectly fit together to give the structure the appearance of great strength. It’s surfaces look worn because the blocks and bricks were originally rubbed together and sluiced with water.

Pura Pengukar Ukaran and Goa Garba are believed to pre-date Hinduism due to there being three meditation niches cut out of the rock face and inscriptions of Kediri script above the hermitage chambers.
