Although small in size, Pura Penataran Topeng has a very significant history. Perched atop the Petanu River in Blahbatuh Village, Pura Penataran Topeng was home to 21 sacred masks dating back to an ancient era. These masks are named the Topeng Gajah Mada (Gajah Mada Mask) and to this day, experts have yet to trace its origins. Some speculate that the masks originated in East Java. The 21 masks depict various characters in Majapahit and Balinese history between the years 1325 and 1650, and remains the central inspiration for many traditional Balinese masks made today. These masks have been transported from Pura Penataran Topeng to Puri Agung Jelantik Blahbatuh and only emerge during very important ceremonies.
