Tucked behind a palm forest and perched on a hillside, the village of Taro is a hidden gem. The village marks the exact center of the island, and the area is known as the original breeding place of the albino cattle. Considered holy by the Balinese, the white cows do not work, and are kept as purebred. In the heart of Taro sits the largest and arguably most beautiful bale agung in Bali. The magnificent pavilion is the center of community life in Taro and is the main spot for political and religious affairs. A little bridge placed over a hole guards the entrance to the temple, and it is said that only the pure can pass; the term ‘pure’ referring to gods and virgins.
