Pura Penataran Topeng is located in Blahbatu, near Gianyar and is the family temple of the prime minister of Gelgel, I Gusti Ngurah Jelantik, who sacked the eastern Javanese palace of Blambangna and brought back 15 topeng masks that have been stored in this temple, the Jelantic family temple for over six centuries.

These 15 masks are considered too sacred to be photographed. These mysterious and powerful totems are only seen during the temples odalan festival.

Masks that are the prototype of the topeng masks are now used in Balinese dance dramas such as the Babad Dalem (Chronicles of The King).

Blahbatuh is an important junction town from where you can head up to historic Gunung Kawi via Kutri, proceed to Bangli and the spectacular Batur region, or head for Klungkung, Rendang, and Besakih.
