The important tooth filling ceremony known as Metatah,marks the transition from puberty to adulthood for young boys and girls and must be completed before marriage or incorporated into a wedding ceremony befoe union.  By filling down the canine teeth, including all six upper front teeth, it is believed that the teenager will be released from the six evils: anger, envy, lust, greed drunkenness, and confusion, or be resistant against these‘animalistic’ aspects that human’s are susceptible to.  The intricate rite is carried out by a Sangging who makes offerings to the gods and performs the 5 – 10 minute procedure on a special platform whilst the teenager is conscious and prone.  These are often conducted in groups in order to avoid the many expenses involved with this ceremony.
