Segara Ayu Street, Sanur, Denpasar Regency, Bali

Literally meaning ‘Sea Temple,’ this is one of many small puras made from coral and black lava rock that dot Sanur Beach.  Located on Jalan Segara Ayu, this pyramid shaped structure has a small shrine at the top and quite likely dates to a prehistoric era.

Said to be one of the oldest temples in the region, Pura Segara faces the wonderful, white sand Sindhu Beach. The Grand Bali Beach forms a huge backdrop. The temple still remains in its original state and features shrines made from coral (probably from the nearby Sanur Reef). These take the form of stepped pyramids. Figurines such as turtles, dragons and other figures from the Hindu epics dot the shrines.
