From its majestic summit one can see all of Bali and beyond in all 360 degrees of glory. It's the only place on the island where both the rising sun and the setting moon are visible simultaneously. An active strato-volcano and Bali's most sacred peak, where the Balinese believe their Gods reside. Located in central-eastern Bali in the Karangasem Regency, Gunung Agung is, by a kilometer, the highest point in Bali with an elevation of 3,148m.  It’s an unforgettable pilgrimage, but it’s getting there that's the challenge. There are two ways to the top: one from Pura Pasar Agung on the southern face and the other from Pura Besakih, Bali's mother temple. The former starts higher and is thus a slightly shorter climb but the latter, that is more difficult, gets you to the highest point of the crater rim not accessible from the other route. Ascents with a guide are best attempted during the April – October dry season, starting at 10pm and under the light of the full moon with the objective of reaching the summit by sunrise. Anyone in good physical shape with no extensive climbing experience should be able to make the formidable climb that takes between 4 - 7 hours each way to complete depending on your pace, but you should also be able to traverse a variety of steep and arduous terrain ranging from thick jungle brush to slippery mud to crumbling shale. A grueling undertaking to say the least, but once you're at the top, all weariness will leave you.
