The important pura at Gunung Lempuyang is nicknamed ‘The Temple of 1000 Steps’ but it’s actually more like 1700 steps to the top of this 1,058m peak. It’s a beautiful two-hour walk up the proper steps that cut through wooded jungle to the summit where Pura Lempuyang Luhur, one of Bali’s important sad kahyangan, is situated.  Be sure to arrive by sunrise as the morning mist lifts for a majestic view of Gunung Agung’s nearly perfect peak in the distance.  If not up for the vigorous climb there is also a temple at the bottom with excellent views of the valley and Gunung Agung.
