Held every year on sasih kepitu, the 7th month of the Balinese Calendar during the new moon (therefore not necessarily always in January), this is a holy day of consciousness in which the Balinese meditate, pray, fast, reflect on their sins and ask for forgiveness as well as cleanse themselves in purification ceremonies held by the ocean. The name of this auspicious day derives from the Sanskrit words Siwa meaning God or peak and Ratri meaning night or darkness, thus translating to 'peak of the night'.
