Tumpek Wayang is special day devoted to Sang Hyang Iswara, the Lord of Puppeteers, when blessing ceremonies called sudamala conducted by dalang (pupeteers) are performed on all wayang (traditional leather shadow puppets) as well as being a day for mental and physical purification rites for those born during this week. The particular transitional date for this event is determined by a confluence of several auspicious days in the Balinese calendar including the birthday of Lord Kala and is celebrated every 210 days in the 27th week of 30-week Balinese Pawukon cycle. It is a day when the puppets are taken from their boxes and placed in position just as if an actual performance were being given, and then blessed by their owners. It is considered unlucky to be born during this period as these offspring would fall prey to the wraths of Lord Kala therefore it is a time for specific purification and protection rites that occur in family temples throughout the island.
