This very unique and traditional Balinese ‘kissing ritual’ held on the first day of the Balinese Saka new year (in March or April, the day after Nyepi) is a mandatory ceremony involving the young maidens and bachelors of Banjar Kaja, South Denpasar. Facing off on opposite sides of the local pitch, the youths slowly advance towards each other, gathering pace until lips eventually meet in a flurry of adolescent smooching, after which on looking parents douse the youths in buckets of cold water. It is believed that this annual ritual prevents disaster from befalling Banjar Kaja.
