This unique thanksgiving ceremony, carried out annually to insure an abundant rice harvest, is held in Kapal Village, Badung Regency and takes place during the kerta masa (harvest season) for the Mengwi region that generally occurs every Sasih Kapat, or fourth month in the Balinese calendar (usually around September or October). Known by locals as Aci Rah Pengangon or Perang Tipat-Bantal (literally The Tipat-Bantal War), this important and ancient tradition that dates back to the eyar 1265 is, in fact, a massive food fight (similar to La Tomatina, the annual tomato war in Bunol, Spain) between the inhabitants of the village in which the ‘weapons of choice’ are tipat/ketupat, the traditional Indonesian rice snack wrapped in a square parcel of young coconut leaves that represents Purusha (female energy) and Bantal, a cylindrical rice cake also wrapped in young coconut leaves that symbolizes Predhana (male energy). Two opposing groups numbering in the thousands meet in the courtyard of the village temple armed with tipat and bantal and engage in two battles, the second being much larger than the first, in which the two groups throw their munitions across at each other, symbolizing the meeting of macsuline and feminine energy. The event concludes with a feast including tipat and bantal, with the remnants gathered and buried in the rice fields as a symbol of fertility and prosperity for the village.
