Set atop the rocky gorge where two branches of the Wos River meet in Campuhan (translated as the confluence of two rivers) 1.5km from Ubud; this dramatically situated temple was built in the 8th century by the Javanese high priest and founder of Ubud, Rsi Markandya.  The name of the temple itself literally means ‘temple situated in a mountain valley’ and it is a uniquely tranquil place said to contain powerful earth energies.

The forest here was a treasure house of medical herbs so they named this ground "Ubad". Ubad means "Medicine" in the Balinese language. It is said that the present name “Ubud” originated from the word “ Ubad.” Therefore, the villagers worship this temple as the birthplace of Ubud.  Tjampihan of Ubud is famous as a spiritual place since a long time, and it is loved by a lot of artists.
