Address:
Pakerisan River, Tampaksiring, Gianyar Regency, Bali
Also along the Pekerisan River gorge, northeast of Ubud and in the middle of Tampaksiring is the important monument, Gunung Kawi whose name translates to 'mountain sculptures'. Access to this 'Valley of The Kings' founded in the 11th century is via steps that lead do to the edge of the river, where carved into the deep 7m cliff niches are five monolithic candi (shrine) temple facades with false doors that are said to lead to the 'other world'. These are symbols of deified rulers, in particular, King Anak Wungsu who ruled east and central Bali in 1050AD and his four wives who committed suttee by leaping into his funeral pyre. During the temple's annual odalan, it is believed that the royal souls return temporarily so that their godly powers may bless the Pakerisan River and flow with fertility throughout the rice fields of the island.
