One could easily spend an entire day exploring the vast complex of temples that make up Bali’s mother temple, Pura Besakih, but if you have time on the way take the approach via the foothills of the Sideman valley in Karengasem.  Easily one of the most beautiful drives on the island, this entire area is also historically significant as the chosen abode of the many priestly families who sought refuge here from the outside world.  Primarily a rice growing region, Sideman village is spread out over three incredibly picturesque river valleys that form a ramp leading to Gunung Agung.

Sideman is a very enchanting and hidden away Bali retreat. It is primarily a rice growing area. There's also a temple at the summit of a very steep set of stairs that offers tremendous views, a scenic river flowing through the valley floor and ample opportunity for trekking too, (while other spots are more convenient, you can organize an ascent of Gunung Agung from Sideman).
