Medewi and Balian are the two beaches on the west coast that are primarily known best for their surf breaks.  If you’re not here to ride waves then check out the western half of Medewi Beach that is sandier than the pebblier eastern half.  There are scenic views from this headland, especially at sunset when you can see the dramatic skyline of the volcanoes of east Java over the Indian Ocean in the distance.  Candi Kusuma is another pretty beach located about 13km west of Negara.

The tiny, remote village of Medewi, is one of the least visited areas of Bali. It is very much a surfing hot spot, and most visitors who do stay here stay for that reason alone. For non-surfers, it does offer a glimpse of what so much of Bali was like before the growth of mass tourism in the 1970s, and is a great place to relax. The beach is divided in to two main portions, the eastern half, which is very rocky with some large flat grey stone boulders, interspersed with pebbles and black sand, and the western half that is sandier. It's not the best beach for sunbathing or lounging, but good for long quiet strolls.

Balian Beach is one of the most relaxing destinations on Bali. ”Balian” means “sacred” in the local vernacular and is the perfect place to “get off the grid” for a few days. Everything from a private villa to a resort to a classic Bali home stay can be found in Balian. Although Balian is a relatively small village, there are plenty of fun things to do. Walk along the beach and watch the local fisherman cast their nets near the river mouth at low tide. Relax at the ocean-side pool at Pondok Pitaya. Participate in a yoga session at the Shankari Retreat. Explore the nearby palm groves and rice paddies. Make a pilgrimage to one of Bali’s lesser-known temples : Purah Rambat Siwi. Surf  there is no shortage of waves in Balian. You can also take a day trip to Medewi, on of the longest left hand waves in the world. Attend a mekepung, one of West Bali’s infamous bull races. Read that novel you’ve been meaning to finish, take photographs of the picturesque Balian coastline.
