Set on the verdant southern slopes of Bali’s second tallest peak known as Coconut Shell Mountain, is another of the island’s important sad kahyangan axial temples.  Built in homage to the mountain and lake gods, this unusual type of pura taman temple (which means it was maintained by a king and has a place to bathe) was purportedly founded in the 11th century by Kuturan the Hindu sage and served as the state temple for Western Bali when Tabanan was an autonomous kingdom.  It is one of the most sacred places on the island where thousands of Balinese from all over the island bring offerings and come to pray during Umanis Galungan, the auspicious day after Galungan.

Pura Luhur Batukaru is one of Bali’s biggest Hindu temples. Its peaceful setting amid the rainforest at the foot of Mount Batukaru enhances its stunning Balinese architecture. The temple's most important shrine is the 7-tiered meru that is in honor of the god of Gunung Batukaru, Mahadewa. The water at Pura Luhur Batukaru is believed to be holy and is used for ceremonies to the Gods to ensure fertility of the land.
