A solemn martyr’s graveyard commemorating Bali’s last puputan (fight to the death) and last stand of Indonesia’s national hero, 29-year-old Lt. Col. I Gusti Ngurah Rai, along with his 94-man resistance movement in the fierce Battle of Marga against the overwhelming Dutch military on November 20th, 1946.  A 17m monument in Margarana’s main courtyard bears the inscribed letter from Ngurah Rai vowing never to surrender to the Dutch as well as his photograph while the 94 stone markers bear the names and origins of each of his fallen comrades that were killed in the battle.  A Hero's Day Ceremony is held here every November 20th with a reenactment of the ‘Long March’ Ngurah Rai took with his troops from Tabanan to Gunung Agung in the failed attempt to distract Dutch forces away from resistance forces arriving from Java.

The Margarana memorial was originally built in 1954 and has been renovated recently. The place is 9 hectare wide and is divided into three parts, following the Tri Mandala concept. The North side of the area is called Taman Pujaan Bangsa complex with several buildings, such as Pahlawan Margarana Monument. Bale (open building) on the west and east side with the Panca Bakti statue, Bahagia park which has 1372 gravestone of the soldiers, Historical Building which has several tools and battleship objects and The Holy Park that is located on the South of the area for visitors who want to pray for the patriotic soldiers who  died during the war.
