Situated on a small headland on the western shore of Lake Bratan is the beautiful and serene temple complex built in 1633 built by the king of Mengwi.  With both Hindu and Buddhist roots, the complex consists of a number of elegantly tiered meru towers dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva as well as the lake goddess Dewi Danu that are set amongst well-manicured gardens and stately temple grounds. The 11 stories of pelinggih meru is dedicated Vishnu. The other shrine is that of Lingga Petak. It is smaller and further away in the lake. This shrine, with a three-tier meru is dedicated to Shiva. A Buddha statue is also present inside this temple.

It is best to visit it in the early morning before the arrival of lake mist. Cool temperature always covers the area of the Ulun Danu Bratan Temple complex, since it is located in the mountainous area at the altitude of some 1200 meters above sea level. It's so high up the hills that clouds form just over the lake.

Ulun Danu Bratan temple is one of the most natural beauty highland shrines in Bali. Danau Bratan is most likely one of the most picturesque and most photographed temple in Bali.
