The Balinese have two traditional calendars, the Sasih and the Pawukon, which run parallel to one another. Whilst the Sasih originates from a Hindu calendrical system originating in India, the Pawukon is said to be indigenous to Bali, rooted in the rice growing cycle as well as Indonesian mythology. Used together, these two calendars determine the complex round of ritual and ceremony that permeates day-to-day life on the island and dictate when specific ceremonies are held on which particular auspicious days. Tourists may view many of these special ceremonies at temples and family compounds provided proper dress and decorum are observed. Beyond ceremonies Bali also has a number of festivals celebrating culture, art, literature and wellbeing. Here is a list of important island ceremonies and events that occur monthly but vary in specific date from year to year as determined by the Balinese calendar (most of the bigger ceremonies happen over the Kuningan holiday period). Only events listed under specific months are held annually during the months noted.
